Southern Middle Students Head to National Competition

Sunday, May 6, 2012-via http://www.thepilot.com

On Saturday, April 28, 11 Southern Middle School students participated in the state level competition of National History Day in Raleigh.

The event was held in, and sponsored by, the Museum of History. The students who participated were: Annelle Staal, Marie Fayssoux, Bailee Westbrook, Adriana Maya, Adrianna Vivero, Lisa Alers-Hankey, Tarinna Randall, Haley Barker, Elyssa Zimmerman, Hannah Gellert and Jenna Martin.

The students have been conducting research for several months with Beth Hurley, their seventh-grade social studies teacher at Southern Middle School.

The theme for the competition was "Revolution, Reaction and Reform." More than 100 projects were part of the competition at the junior and senior levels.

Southern Middle School took home two awards. Jenna Martin and Hannah Gellert (seventh-grade), took home first place in the junior group exhibit category for their research on anti-smoking campaigns.

Annelle Staal and Marie Fayssoux (eighth-grade) took home second place in the junior group exhibit category for their research on the Mobius Loop and recycling.

Both groups will continue on to compete at the national level in College Park, Md., June 10-14.

The students will represent North Carolina in their category, and will be competing against 2,000 other students from around the country.

National History Day is a competition that encourages students to investigate aspects of history. The students are provided with a theme, and then must chose a topic to research that relates to the given theme. Students spend months looking at primary and secondary sources.

The competition starts at the regional level, with students rising to the state, and then national level, depending on their level of work.

The National History Day program encourages research, literary skills, communication and teamwork.

Pinecrest Prom

Posted on: April 29, 2012

How awesome it was to show up at Sandhills Horticulture Gardens and see the kids all dressed up taking pictures. Given the number of kids there, they should have just held the Pinecrest Prom there. :) The gardens are such a beautiful place to take pictures!
